At PlayerStat Data, we collect accurate and intelligent performance data solutions across the LOI Premier Division. Pushing forward with data insights that paint clearer performance pictures for clients and fans alike.

Our goal is to provide the end user with reliable data insights that can enhance the story that a player’s performance data output offers. Adding relevant context to the players’ performances on the pitch.

This season, we have added our unique player rating on a game-by-game basis – ratings that are driven by the players’ data output and customised by position (i.e. defensive metrics weighted greater for defenders than attackers and vice versa). With that in mind, this blog will highlight the top 5 performers in each ‘position’ over the first 4 weeks of the LOI Premier Division season.

*ratings are an average across the 4 games played

**players require a minimum of 250 minutes across the 4 games

Defenders

Week 1 – 4 defender power ratings

Sean Hoare has been the standout defensive performer over the first 4 games, standing out across metrics such as def. aerial success %, progressive regain % and progr. pass completion %. Shane McEleney has been a solid performer at Finn Harps since the beginning of last season – solid in possession and winning the ball back. His 100% tackle success rate, 100% att. 1v1 success and 74% progr. pass completion.

Anto Breslin, while not featuring in the game against Dundalk, has stand-out success rates across def. 1v1 situations (84.56%), def. aerial success (88.24%) and 100% att. 1v1 success rates.

Midfielders

Week 1 – 4 midfielder power ratings

A more rounded approach is taken to calculate the midfielders’ final rating after each game. It involves a more even metric-rating approach across defensive, attacking and possession output but gives a clear indication of who stands out in this position.

Drogheda United are well served by both Gary Deegan and Ronan Murray, Murray slotting in here as a slightly more advanced central midfield option as opposed to an out-and-out AM option. Among the two, Murray stands out with his progressive regain success %, but Deegan is a beast in winning back possession – along with his possession contribution across the team (i.e. his frequency in possession compared to his teammates).

As for Chris Forrester, he stands out on the attacking side, the highest shot involvement of any CM in the league (level with Will Patching). Added to his high att. 1v1 success among fellow CMs and progr. pass completion (74.8%), he sits in third place in our ratings.

Attackers

Week 1 – 4 attacker power ratings

Attackers aren’t judged solely on goals scored, but this metric is weighted much more heavily towards the forward players than defenders. We feel our overall rating system gives a much clearer view of an attacker’s overall performance picture, as opposed to just goals scored.

Both Graham Burke and Danny Mandriou have solid defensive output for attacking players, a reflection of the style of play that they find themselves in each week. There is little to choose between the players’ shot efficiency % (i.e. both coming in at around 6 efforts on target for every 10 efforts) & Mandriou leads the way (between both players) in assists. Burke stands out every so slightly in att. 1v1 situations and the “worldies from the halfway line” metric!!!

Adam Foley is merely continuing his excellent form from the end of last season, showing similar output across att. aerial duel success %, successful hold-up % and of course, goals scored. He stands with an 85.7% att. 1v1 success rate, which is up there with a few tricky, pacey wingers. The goals scored obviously stand out, but Adam is clearly having a fine spell in other facets of his game.
